Sample Sale Of The Day: T-Bags

Hautelook’s doing a T-Bags sale today at 11 a.m., but we thought we’d highlight a few sale items here: We owe them a debt of gratitude, as a T-Bags top (yellow, slightly billowly, the shirt referred to as “the shirt that makes us look like a whale wearing a mango costume)—figured prominently in our Six-Item Experiment wardrobe, and still, we love it. This is the halterneck top, was $180, now $72

We also like this one. Summery prints forever! Or at least into mid-September. T-Bags printed jersey dress, was $185, now $74

The Breton Top: These Are Four We Like

We went to a music show at the Whitney on Friday night, in what may very well have been our one and only cultural experience of the summer. Eh, everybody’s busy. What we noticed: $8.25 is much, much, much too much for a glass of wine. Also, literally every single person there (well, one in 25) was wearing some sort of variation on a nautical, Breton-y top. We weren’t, but we sort of wished we were. These are four we like. Above: the Petit Bateau version, $83

This one was too long for us—conveniently, J. Crew advises us to buy a size down, but we didn’t see this advisory until too late, and by then we were bored. Lovely material, though. J. Crew “St James Merdien II nautical tee,” $85

Lands End has decided to call this a “sailor tee,” which is not quite a Breton top, but will suffice for our purposes. Lands End boatneck sailor tee, $29.50

And let’s call this one the literal interpretation. Delia’s nautical charms racerback, $19.50

Give Us $100 To Take To Forever 21 And This Is What We Would Get

Forever 21 is the Topshop of America: so much stuff! So little money! (Meanwhile, Topshop (in SoHo) is like … eh, it’s just somehow not as exciting, the one here, compared to the one in London.) But this is about Forever 21. Whatever the weirdness with the Bible references on the bags, and God (speaking of) knows how many times we’ve gone in and left empty-handed, we remain solidly pro—and so we went to the Jersey Gardens branch, hopes high and expectations equally so.

We could have easily spent $100 on disposable accessories—jewelry, clutches, shoes, etc.—but in our opinion, this isn’t what they do best—actually, we’d say that H&M does better, or Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie at increasingly higher price points. (Or, of course, millions of industrious Etsy sellers.) Our mission was to find a shirt, which could be worn with shorts. Wide net, as it were.

Three Things We Love From Eryn Brinie

We’d never heard of Eryn Brinie until we saw it in the MIA-cover edition of NYLON, and now we sort of love it. We stopped in the SoHo store in the middle of last week’s heat wave, so it was unbelievably empty, and we got to spend all our time with the floaty, fluttery clothes more or less by ourselves. Feminine! That’s what we think when we think Eryn Brinie. We also think: suitable for the office! Not so much of a draw for us. But we aspire.

Above: floaty and feminine, right? This is the Isabella blouse, $80 (and PS, the shop is currently having a 30%-off midsummer sale, so it’s actually $56)

Line of the Week: Society for Rational Dress

We love Society for Rational Dress—not least because they have women of all ages wearing the clothes on their website. (All we want is what men of all ages have: belief in cultural relevance after 21/30/35/40/50/60/70/etc.) They are named for, and this we believe is fascinating, the Rational Dress Society, which, in the 1880s, agitated:

against the introduction of any fashion in dress that either deforms the figure, impedes the movements of the body, or in any way tends to injure the health. It protests against the wearing of tightly-fitting corsets; of high-heeled shoes; of heavily-weighted skirts, as rendering healthy exercise almost impossible; and of all tie down cloaks or other garments impeding on the movements of the arms.

Brilliant! We could not agree more. And these are three of our favorite pieces from them, now in stores:

Give Us $100 At Old Navy And This Is What We’d Get

We were driving past the mall the other day when we said to ourselves: What would we do if we had $100? We would probably spend it bagels, and magazines, and that G2 version of Gatorade. And possibly a pretzel. However: What would we do if were given $100 and had to spend it at Old Navy? We figured putting this to the test was the best way of seeing if there’s anything good at Old Navy at the moment. This is what we found.

Five Racerbacks We Love From $7.50 to $52

Racerbacks: They’re our t-shirts of the summer. Shoulders! We’re totally pro. Honestly, we’re not even sure why we love them so much—all we know is that they say “summer” in a way that regular tank tops just don’t.

For example: This Splendid racerback tank has the nicest back twist we’ve ever seen. (As it should, at $44.) We’re going up a size—which is just as well, since the XS and S are sold out. Distressed tank, $44

Big Sale At EMS

Summer is always a tricky time for us here at Bunnyshop HQ, since it is the one time of year that we try to shop as little as possible—save it for August! Money should be spent only on ice cream, and park fees, and beach access permits! Or, potentially, that little passport book you buy at national parks. (We are obsessed with these, and look forward to obtaining no fewer than five national park stamps when we go exploring with our friend Craig this weekend. It’s all about the stamps.) We don’t entirely mean this, of course; summer’s also our favorite time to wear lovely clothing, as the season requires comparatively fewer pieces. (Than, you know, the colder ones.) Let’s just say that during this one, perfect season, our shopping budget is divided between clothes and, for example, bright orange safety whistles, for when we go hiking (like on Sunday) and become convinced we are about to be attacked by a serial killer, or a bear, or a tick with Lyme disease, not that we’re entirely sure how the whistle would protect us against any of them.

Which is all our very long-winded way of saying there’s a sale on at Eastern Mountain Sports, our local version of REI. We actually worked at EMS in high school—for all of a week, before we quit, terrified that we would sell a rock climber the wrong equipment, and he would die. (Seriously.) EMS is, in fact, where we bought the safety whistle, and last week’s compass, and next week’s most-perfect daypack. But the small area of overlap between BS (a love of lovely things, occasionally functional) and EMS (a love of functional things, occasionally lovely) is the Icebreaker line. This is one of our favorite brands in the world—our midweight tee was the only gear-type piece of equipment we took on our two month tour of southern Africa, and it never failed us. We love this stuff. We’re using this picture from the Icebreaker website, even though it’s entirely the wrong season, because the pictures on the EMS site are not so nice.

Did we explain the sale? It’s 20% off anything, your choice. Our choice would be the Icebreaker women’s crew, was $90, now $72. Actually, our choice would be a new tent, but close enough.

Miami: Topshop

Picture 24.png

So! We’re reporting from Miami for the next couple days. We love Miami, because we always get to see people dress like they would never, ever dress in Manhattan. Er, maybe in the Meatpacking District. But definitely not in Brooklyn. One of the emails we got when we figured out how to use the wi-fi was from Topshop, which said “Welcome to Miami,” which we thought was weird. But: fun collection! Not as glitzy as the actual Miami, we’re thinking, but fun, nonetheless.

We stood in the taxi line behind three Danes we are sure were international DJs, and all we wanted on earth at that moment was to be a fluent Danish speaker, because at least they weren’t showing their boobs off everywhere, if you know what we mean. Eh, it’s what happens when you travel on your own. We got over it.

Based on what we witnessed downstairs, these shoes might be the most Miami things in the Miami collection. Can we mention here that our dinner just showed up, and not only is there a pat of butter for the bread, but that butter has a little frosting of salt on top of it. This may be our new favorite food. Topshop platform shoes, $135

Picture 25.png

The funny thing (er, to us, anyway) is, we were just about to say something about how this would have to be about two inches shorter to rival the dresses we saw outside. And yet, this is officially a top. Um, not in Miami, apparently. Topshop color-block “top,” $36

Picture 26.png

And again—we bet someone could maybe remove the bottom two layers. Topshop body-con skirt, $44

Picture 27.png

And we have to say: We do not endorse this hat. We add it only so we can mention that we just saw someone wearing it in the lobby, only it was covered with silver sequins. Ooh, we know we sound all complain-y, but we’re totally into it after five months of Uggs, winter leggings, and black sweaters. Straw trilby, $40

Sarah Connor + The Cowboy Shirts

Picture 2.png

Are we the only ones who watch Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles? We very well may be, based on the ratings. In any case: you can barely see it here, but Jessie, whose circumstances we will not discuss but are rather traumatic, wears the best cowboy shirts of all time. We have been effectively seduced into buying our own. As below:

Picture 3.png

This is exactly the one we want. Very very aggravatingly, Topshop’s US prices remain twice as much as UK prices—apparently not resistant to the pound’s hot-potato dropping. Extremely annoying that you could buy this for $40 in London. Topshop check shirt, $55

200903230118.jpg

This is cheaper, but not quite adorable, and too long. On the pro: love the colors. BDG button down, $48

Picture 22.png

And this one we like because—see that waist? Fitted. It’s all we ask for. Levi’s top, $48
