We tried one question for a designer—too short! We now we’ve gone with three. We are both hopeful and expectant that this is the correct, just-right, Goldilocks-style happy medium. Anyhoo: We love Popomomo, and we were delighted that designer Lizz Wasserman took time out of her busy day to answer three of our questions (with many sub-questions! Ugh, the sub-questions will just drive you bananas.)

Above: that’s the simple snap top, $78

BS: What is your dream fashion piece of the distant future? Like, what magical thing do you wish clothes could do, but can’t (at least not now)? Is there any connection between that and your current work?

LW: Um, wash themselves so I never had to do laundry again? I came across silver jersey in Hong Kong that had cleaning properties: but that’s a little limiting and expensive.

I kinda think clothes are already magical: they can keep you warm or cold, can express things without words, make you happy or protect you literally or figuratively.

The drop-sleeve snap back top, $84

BS: If you could force everyone—let’s say in America, to keep some sort of geographical context here—to do one thing to make our country a greener, more ecologically friendly place, what would it be?

LW: Unfortunately, I think only a certain extent of change can come from individuals, if the industry doesn’t provide enough options in pricing, styling, fabrication. I think it would be great if America didn’t allow clothing to be sold here unless it was made sustainably for the environment and people—then industry would have to change worldwide.

BS: How long were you in Philadelphia, and what do you miss most about it? (Extra points for something fashion related.) How long have you been in LA, and what do you like most about it?

LW: I was in Philly about five years: I miss the community I had in that moment in Philly. Since it’s a smaller city, you’d see all your friends at the art opening or whatever was going on, end up at dinner together, at someone’s house till way too late…. You could have 20 friends at your place in 20 minutes—notsomuch in New York or LA because of trains and cars and space. Then again: it could have to do with being under 25 at the time and having very little need to sleep a reasonable amount.

After Philly I was in Brooklyn for a year, and then we’ve been in LA for three years as of September. I love that everything is possible here: for designers and other creative people: you can create anything here and have the time and space to do it. I love living on the east side of LA; I feel like all of us over here are in on some secret about this awesomely cool city inside a city that everyone thinks they know.

We’d never heard of Eryn Brinie until we saw it in the MIA-cover edition of NYLON, and now we sort of love it. We stopped in the SoHo store in the middle of last week’s heat wave, so it was unbelievably empty, and we got to spend all our time with the floaty, fluttery clothes more or less by ourselves. Feminine! That’s what we think when we think Eryn Brinie. We also think: suitable for the office! Not so much of a draw for us. But we aspire.

Above: floaty and feminine, right? This is the Isabella blouse, $80 (and PS, the shop is currently having a 30%-off midsummer sale, so it’s actually $56)

We like—let’s call them “easy, breezy” summer dresses, and this qualifies. Eryn Brinie tiered dress (also available in a very light pink), was $125, now $87.99

If we were looking for perfect black pants, these would totally be in the running. Eryn Brinie black pants, were $80, now $56

We love Society for Rational Dress—not least because they have women of all ages wearing the clothes on their website. (All we want is what men of all ages have: belief in cultural relevance after 21/30/35/40/50/60/70/etc.) They are named for, and this we believe is fascinating, the Rational Dress Society, which, in the 1880s, agitated:

against the introduction of any fashion in dress that either deforms the figure, impedes the movements of the body, or in any way tends to injure the health. It protests against the wearing of tightly-fitting corsets; of high-heeled shoes; of heavily-weighted skirts, as rendering healthy exercise almost impossible; and of all tie down cloaks or other garments impeding on the movements of the arms.

Brilliant! We could not agree more. And these are three of our favorite pieces from them, now in stores:

We love this dress, the jewelry, even the hair. Sheesh. Society for Rational Dress eyelet-belt dress, $316

And the back on this is beautiful. Extremely bare, but beautiful. Society for Rational Dress black racerback tank, $134

Finally: It’s pretty standard from the front, but the back—swoony. Society for Rational Dress open-back top, $126

Oh! We hope you saw Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton last night, because it was fabulous, even if we did turn on The Sarah Connor Chronicles at one point near the end. Anyway: Our favorite moment was when he got all gooey-eyed over Ed Ruscha, so we thought we would put one up here. Do you know that song "Paper Planes" on Kala? No? ITunes. Investigate. It is totally worth it.

If we were going to buy one thing from MXMJ, it would be this:

Especially with those sweet peep-toes. MXMJ silk dress, $298

We keep forgetting it is couture season! Such a nice thing in July, which is, we believe, best spent doing nothing but sitting outside, staring at a body of water, or, in our case, biting your tongue so hard that you spend five days spraying Chloroseptic on it and saying things like, “Theriouthly, thith thoup ith awethome.” Anyhoo. Couture! Like at Chanel, above. We are wondering: to what event should this Chanel couture dress \ gown be worn? We just always feel a bit better about things when our couture has a practical function. (Er, “practical.”) Here is what we are wondering: given the option between this dress, and a $15 dress from Old Navy plus all the cash for the difference in price, which would be like five billion dollars, who would get married in the ON dress? We so would. But we were just discussing this with someone who felt very strongly about the princess-for-a-day thing. We are torn.
