Rare Device: Our Favorite Store in SF, and the Prints We Want Most

We were just describing Rare Device as our favorite store in SF, and it is: It is just ridiculous that the owner (who was very nice! we liked her!) ripped it from the heart of Park Slope. (Well, South Slope.) It has all the books you would want to buy, plus artist shows, and all the housewares and things are like the very best of Etsy. Eh. We could go on. We will not. Except to say that we will be there tomorrow night for the opening of artist Trish Grantham's show:

Incredibly Lovely Art Thing: Nike Savvas

We just saw a photo of this show, bizarrely, in the KLM in-flight magazine on the way back from South Africa. Isn't it fucking unbelievable? Here is our latest art school horror story: We were recently waitlisted at an art school with the name "Royal" in it, which was exciting enough on its own, and then last week, they actually told us—and all the other waitlist-ees—that we'd gotten in ... by mistake. So we are sort of hating them at the moment, but at the same time, it's work like this that makes us go ... Eh. It's worth it in the long run. Hope maybe you like as much as we do.

Disney Concert Hall: Out + About

So pretty! We totally don't get Downtown LA, except that it is apparently where all our American Apparel stuff is made, but we finally got to see Disney Concert Hall, and we love! Totally made up for the weirdness.

Murakami at the Brooklyn Museum: BS Hearts

Especially as it is the rare art show with the comes-with Louis Vuitton shop. However, we will be focused on things like this tea towel, $25.

NYC Framers: Reader Mail

We totally forgot to mention that today is totally Reader Question Friday! As opposed to the other days when we woke up and had no freaking idea what to write about.

In this hour's Reader Mail:

do you have fine art framers you'd recommend in NYC?  just wondering. I used to use Sterling in SF, and they were fantastic. could not recommend them more highly. framing's always expensive, but (almost always) worth it.

We have nothing! Nada! Zilch and zero! This is a bit, at this moment for us, like: Where do you store your extra caviar? (Tax day! It is our ruin!) We do hope maybe someone out there might have an answer for this. We were recently given an artwork by one of our favorite artists, Alyson Fox, and we are so stupid we actually put it in a folder to bring it home to New Jersey, and now we have no idea where it is. We are that stupid. Argh.

Anyhoo: anyone have an idea? We would use it maybe after we bought this, above: Michael Pfisterer's Urban Spaces, which we love so freaking much and is available at Lumas.

20X200: Quite Possibly Our Favorite Thing in the Whole World

We love art. Went to art school! We're believers. But while we [try to] make it [usually not, quite], we rarely buy it, unless it is made by kindergartners. This may change thanks to 20X200: Twice a week, they sell a different limited-edition artwork, in various sizes—the cheapest being only $20!

We tried to refrain writing about this for various reasons, but they're just too amazing. We can't believe we missed this one, left, by the Starn twins. (Look here to see the whole idea, which is even better than this one image.) Ah! Art love! We live for it.

Sophie Calle: Bunnyshop Hearts

Perhaps the only bright moment of our interview at the Royal College of Art (wait-listed, though we're unsure if this is actually good or bad news) was the few seconds we spent talking about how much we love artist Sophie Calle. If  you don't know her, she is totally insane in all the right ways, and one of her super famous pieces is about getting over a guy but in the best, most artful way possible. She is like the reason we're going to art school. She was the reason we went to art school, even though we didn't know it until we were a year in.

Anyway: We got to Paris today and literally jumped up and down when we saw that she has a show up here, at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Then we stooped over and picked up the digital camera that fell out of our pocket. We were going to see the Bayeux tapestry, but we'll have to get it next time. (It's like 900 years old. It'll be there this summer.)

If you haven't seen her book Exquisite Pain, we recommend taking a look. (Even if we can't afford it.)

Cut-Paper Art: Bunnyshop Hearts

We love paper cuts! Especially when they are 26"X20"-inch paper-cuts of trees.

That picture is clearly a bit keystoned (and knowing what that word means better be worth the $20,000 we just spent on art school), but we like.
