The Holiday Dress Smorgasbord Continued: Black Dress Edition

Black dresses. They make life so easy. Black dress, black tights, black shoes: It's not exactly rocket science. Sometimes, when we have time to be leisurely in our thinking, like when we wait for any sort of public transportation in the city of San Francisco, we think they are sort of a cop-out. And we stand by that. But: (A) sometimes cop-outs are actually totally adorable and (B) sometimes cop-outs are all you have time for. "Cop-out" is stronger language than we're ideally looking for. You know what we mean.

We tried this time to pick up more options with sleeves. (Ignoring the one-shoulder one, below, with the bow.)

We are really not at all, at all at all, fans of the sheer, but we're going to look past it on this one because we love that beaded bodice so much. Rebecca Taylor dress, $335

This is so conservative. At our worst, our style of dressing is more boring than conservative. We are really quite anti-conservative. But we are realizing, tragically often, how useful it can be, like when you are trying not to embarrass your friends at their conservative social gatherings. There is always a place for the sequin hotpants. It is just that not all places are the place for sequin hotpants. This is what we're telling ourselves. French Connection dress, $178

Conservative ... but also v. v. sequin-y! Cuter on than it looks, btw. Topshop dress, $150

All we ever ask of the Gap is that not embarrass us. Or charge us more than $50.

We wish this wasn't quite as, you know, wet-look, but we're totally into the draping, especially after it won that Rami the first PR challenge. DVF dress, $346

Er, we wanted another dress for less than $40, and this is the best we came up with. We tried. Old Navy dress, $39.50

This is the one we like with the one-shouldered bow. Jay Godfrey dress, $495
