Reader Mail: The Kate Bosworth Dilemma

    In today's Reader Mail:

Look! It's Kate Bosworth. And she's wearing high-waisted denim. What do you think? What does everyone think? What sort of jeans should I be wearing for fall?

    XO
    J.

Well, we're of the opinion that selection of jeans, more than any other item of clothing, should be dictated by what suits—and thus remains completely aside from the question of trends. They're just too tricky, in our opinion, to go willy-nilly swapping flare for skinny for high-waist just because Kate Bosworth is doing it. We're impressed and everything that she has the two different colored eyes, but beyond that, we don't know that we're necessarily looking to her as honest-to-goodness inspiration.

So: We'll be wearing the same skinny jeans we wore last year—just because it's as close as we can get to going out with bare legs without actually being bare-legged in the middle of winter.

For 18th Amendments like Kate's, try these: 18th Amendment Bacalls, $218

We, meanwhile, will very happily be wearing our Hudson straight legs ($154).

What is everyone else wearing, denim-wise, this fall?

YUP! I'll be rockin my skinnies like "WHA?!", thanks!

I have 1 pair of grey skinny jeans from J-crew, a pair of dark and fairly high waisted jeans from the Gap, a pair of very dark trouser jeans (also Gap), and a pair of light colored low rise (but not too low) jeans from Abercrombie (by way of Buffalo Exchange) that are my favorite casual pair. I must say that I will probably get behind the wide legged trend very soon, but I may just get some wide legged trousers rather than jeans.
But the waist issue isn't that big of a deal for me because I refuse to tuck in my shirts. I have no waist and tucking in just emphasises that fact.

i'll be rocking my j brand straight leg in various colors, as well as my paige bootcuts, and my one pair of wide legged jeans. basically i'm going to wear it all.

I've been wearing wide-legged jeans forever, so that's not going to change. I do have a pair of high-waisted trouser jeans that look fantastic, especially for work, and they're not SO high that they look ridiculous. Am a little worried about what I'll do with them once they're not so fashionable any more, though. Which brings me to the pair of jeans that I'll wear forever with no worries -- a lovely mid-rise bootcut pair from Citizens of Humanity. Easy.

You have an excellent point, Ms. Fab. A nice flattering pair of mid-rise bootcuts is timeless!

I waited years to be able to find skinny jeans on the racks again. there is no-fucking-way that I'm gonna stop wearing a style that makes me look hot (and tall).

Last night I was trying on a tunic length sweater with my grey skinny jeans tucked into flat black boots thinking "I can't wait till its cold outside so I can wear this with a long scarf." I swear to God I just saw a picture of the High School Musical II girl wearing the exact same outfit- except the colors were different. I maintain that skinny jeans are still in!
