Yesterday we shook each of the Jonas Brothers’ hands twice. (One of them, three times.) We swear to God we still can’t tell them apart. We also interviewed Demi Lovato, which brings us to the subject of this post: her hot-pink lipstick. We swear, equally, that we’ve never seen this look good on anyone in real life. A junket is not exactly real life, but she is a real person, and it looked amazing. We want to try! And we want, apparently, to take our make-up cues from Disney Channel stars. Eh, it happens. Olive skin, dark eyes, dark hair, hot-pink lips. We wouldn’t have put it together.

This MAC shade above (Girl About Town, “fabulous fuchsia”) is the closest we’ve found to it. MAC lipstick, $14.50

We are unhappy to acknowledge the fact that summer is slowly coming to a close—but we’re finding some solace in looking over our favorite fall looks. This one, from Prada. Lady-coats: making us happy.

Hautelook’s doing a T-Bags sale today at 11 a.m., but we thought we’d highlight a few sale items here: We owe them a debt of gratitude, as a T-Bags top (yellow, slightly billowly, the shirt referred to as “the shirt that makes us look like a whale wearing a mango costume)—figured prominently in our Six-Item Experiment wardrobe, and still, we love it. This is the halterneck top, was $180, now $72

We also like this one. Summery prints forever! Or at least into mid-September. T-Bags printed jersey dress, was $185, now $74

Well: the most exciting fashion night of Mad Men ever? Er….

Have you ever seen this show? It might be the funniest show we’ve ever seen. It was on the first year we lived in London, and we loved it beyond any other show (besides, like, Extras, and The Office, and of course The Amazing Race, and possibly Battlestar Galactica and The Wire.) Still: ridiculous, and ridiculously funny. The entire two-season run is on Hulu, which is why we didn’t go outside much this weekend. See if you like!

Brief note for the other Flashforward fans out there, if one exists: Michelle Gomez, who plays the lunatic Scottish staff liaison, is married, IRL, to the guy who played Llyod Simcoe. We don’t know why, but this pleases us.

We went to a music show at the Whitney on Friday night, in what may very well have been our one and only cultural experience of the summer. Eh, everybody’s busy. What we noticed: $8.25 is much, much, much too much for a glass of wine. Also, literally every single person there (well, one in 25) was wearing some sort of variation on a nautical, Breton-y top. We weren’t, but we sort of wished we were. These are four we like. Above: the Petit Bateau version, $83

This one was too long for us—conveniently, J. Crew advises us to buy a size down, but we didn’t see this advisory until too late, and by then we were bored. Lovely material, though. J. Crew “St James Merdien II nautical tee,” $85

Lands End has decided to call this a “sailor tee,” which is not quite a Breton top, but will suffice for our purposes. Lands End boatneck sailor tee, $29.50

And let’s call this one the literal interpretation. Delia’s nautical charms racerback, $19.50

J. Crew! Reader C., who was actually the one to suggest the life-changing Six Item Experiment, also suggested that we make J. Crew the next buying trip. This was a suggestion we had to take, as the previous one was ultimately so rewarding. J. Crew proved to be equally revelatory—both in how it derailed our Six-Item Experiment [now more or less the Eight Item Experiment, though we're back on the wagon] and provided us with our favorite skirt ever.

We went in expecting to not buy anything. We were wrong. Eh, not the worst thing that ever happened, and in fact there is the good news: There were loads of great things in store, and we would have gone home with more if we were buying less fiscally responsible than we have sworn to be.

This is the Cascading Cardigan ($49.50—on sale online for $38.60). A funny color and a lot of material, but: loved. A sad return.

Nothing special to see here—and it’s not available online, though for the purposes of this entry we’re going to call it a twisted-neck tank, $65. Verdict: return.

Equally, nothing incredibly special here—cashmere, but in our opinion, not worth the $158 price tag. We do really loved how it looked on the catalogue model, however—we might have tried a bit harder if we’d seen this picture first. Cashmere crew-neck cardigan, $158. Verdict: return.

We say again: nothing incredibly special, but the fabric was really nice—they say it’s “made of supersoft, superfine MicroModal®.” We disagree that “supersoft” is one word, but agree that it was, in fact, super soft. Microspun cotton tank, $28

We actually really loved this tee, which for some reason we decided we’d wear two sizes too big. But—$44.99? On sale? Verdict: pass. We can’t figure out where this is in the online catalogue—it’s close to (but much more expensive than) the vintage cotton henley, $23.60

We will discuss this in greater detail later today—this was voluminous on us (we missed the size-down advisory), so this was rejected. (Also it was about twice as much as it should have been.) We wished we’d seen this other St James topSt James Naval II shirt, $115

Our friend K. wore this t-shirt every day in high school (in different colors). We have the utmost respect for it, but though we liked it, it wasn’t enough to tempt us out of our Six Item monasticism. Verdict: return. Stripe pocket tee, $39.50

We’re pro-hoody but this one was quite bulky—why is everything so long these days? are we shrinking? Honestly, it doesn’t even look that great on the model. Haya pullover hoody, $65

This is when we began to get tired. This sweater: nothing special—what else is there to say?—and quite voluminous. The kind of thing you’d actually probably be really happy to get for Christmas, if you know what we mean. Cashmere v-neck sweater, $145

We actually loved this sweater—it was almost a keeper, much cuter in person than online. The price, ultimately, was too high for us, and we weren’t 100% about the shirring. Merino cardigan, $88

Now, the weird thing. For some reason, we didn’t take pictures of the two things we actually bought. This is a mystery: we bought a skirt we would swear is this one above, except the one we bought is $100 cheaper, and the style numbers don’t match. But as far as we can tell, they’re identical, down to the weird elastic waist—the only thing we don’t like about it, though not so much that it kept us from buying it. Yay! Metallic sequined bell skirt, $275

We also got this top. This is actually the most we’ve spent on clothes since January. Perfect-fit foldover tank, $29.50

Final tally: $152.50. It was worth it.

08.13.2010

August. WTF, right? We sort of await the return of autumn, and life, to New York City, though of course we love summer more than anything, including cheese. So: dilemma. All we know is that we have a few slow weeks left (which, paradoxically, seem to be complicated by a million work projects—we’re not alone in this, right?) and then everything’s going to go massive. Massive, we say! Like on Monday, when we debut our amazing (well, we think it’s amazing) and thorough compendium of Emma’s sweaters from Glee! Anyway, a brief look back before moving forward:

- This was the week our Six Items experiment went completely bananas. Actually, we went bananas, and took them with us.

- Our co-editor eagerly awaits the change of season. (Also: boots.)

- We made several music selections this week: basically everything from Glee, and a song that makes us again wish to be a professional dancer.

- We had our first poll! We love it. Vote! It’s about sequined hot pants.

- Here’s the most questionable coverline we’ve ever seen.

- Also: scarves. What’s your opinion?

- Finally: We love the Mad Men fashions! And here is all of them. From this week’s episode, anyway.

We have a soft spot in our heart for Cosmo, whose book editor recommended our book on The Today Show (OMG! Only $12! Buy one buy one!). But we wonder about the coverlines. Well, one of them.

We don’t usually do two songs in one week, but hotDAMN! do we love this one. Please listen! And tell us if you like, we’re curious. We’re temped to put in a another poll. We can’t help it.
