Beauty Review: Yerba Mate Tea Cleanser From Kiehls

Product: Kiehl’s Yerba Mate Tea Cleanser

Cost: $20.50

What they say it does: “This gentle herbal gel cleanser, suitable for all skin types, is formulated with an extract derived from Yerba Maté, an extraordinary South American herb, to help maintain a healthy-looking, youthful vivacity.”

Our review: Cleansers are difficult to review, we think, because what works for one face won’t necessarily work for another—and one cleanser might not be the best one for the same face, year in and year old. (We’re talking to you, Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple.) So we only speak for other people with combination-but-generally-chilled-out olive skin, tending-toward-oily-more-than-dry-but-basically-combination: We love this cleanser! We bought it in Buenos Aires (see above: “extraordinary South American herb.” Generally we try really hard not to buy products overseas that we could buy at home—our first two purchases in London were at the Gap and Starbucks, and for this, we will forever be ashamed—but we needed to wear sunscreen, and if we were going to wear sunscreen, we needed something to take it off. Ergo, Yerba Mate Tea Cleanser. (It’s vaguely South American!)

We have nothing to say but good things about this cleanser—what is there to say, really? It seems to clean our face. It doesn’t dry it out too much. We haven’t broken out lately. We’re not entirely convinced about the “healthy-looking, youthful vivacity”—vivacity seems like an awful lot to ask for, especially in this heat—but otherwise: We’re pro. And we’ll say that our 8.4 fl. oz. bottle (at an unpleasing $20.50) has lasted over three months, which we deem an acceptable cost-per-use. Economics, like!

In short: We heartily recommend.

Our grade: A
