In theory, we like summer. We love long days, we love swimming, we love not being freezing cold everywhere we go. The only thing we don't like is, well, being hot. We do not wear shorts, we don't love sandals, and we find it hard to find dressy-enough shirts for work that we actually like. Once late July/early August hits, we start to get fall fever. We don't necessarily want it to get cold, but we get really excited about breaking out boots, wearing jeans without sweating, and shirtsleeves.

This year, we're slowly, slowly getting ready. We're still on our saving-money kick, and after cleaning out our closet, we realized that 15 pairs of jeans could be considered excessive (we're donating about half of them). While we colossally failed at not spending money between two certain dates, we did cut back quite a bit. We haven't set foot in cheapie stores, like Forever 21. We're not saying we're 'all investment piece, all the time', but there is something to be said for quality.

Our first piece for this year are a new pair of Frye campus boots; we've always, always wanted them, and we finally broke down today (we did not feel pressured at all by the nice salesman who was probably lying when he said we were holding the last pair in our size in the entire company). We're going to keep them for a week, try them on with jeans, and make sure we love them – since they're not cheap. They're classic, good for all weather, and a nice break from our dressier pairs.

If you have these, we'd love to hear how you like them. Leave us a comment and let us know – we're very susceptible to suggestions.

As for pants, well. We're sticking with skinny jeans. We know there are a ton of styles that are hotter/better/newer; but we don't support them for us. We look weird in jeans that aren't dark, slim cut and slightly low (by weird we mean distinctly older than we would like). We tried a pair from the Gap, and the waist was so high we forgot what decade it was. Will we be buying insanely expensive, high-school dance scandalous low rise? No way. We'll keep getting ours from Delia's, but for those who want something a little more high end, we like this pair from J Brand. We love J Brand (so much stretch!), and this rise is definitely appropriate for someone over 13.

For shirts and whatnot, we're going to recycle our standard button downs (plaid, please), striped long sleeves, and simple cuts from American Apparel. We're going to update with this ring from Urban Outfitters; words cannot describe how much we love it. We don't care what anyone thinks.

  1. I don’t have the campus boot but a knee-high version of this: http://www.zappos.com/product/7438331/color/325
I wear them with everything: jeans, skirts, dresses, without tights in early fall, and then with through spring.
Yes, Frye boots are expensive, but I wear them everywhere, and they last. I liked my brown boots so much that I bought a shorter black version at a year end clearance sale in the winter. ENJOY!

  2. I am very jealous that you have Frye boots. I have lusted after them for years. I do not own them because my legs are so big that the pull on styles of boots Never Fit.

  3. I am so with you!! I am tired of my summer clothes, although I have found this is the perfect time to weed out things I haven’t worn all summer and still don’t want to wear…out the door!
FRYE ENVY! Please review! I don’t know that this will be my fall to purchase them but I do so want them!
CURIOUS: what criteria did you use for getting rid of jeans? I keep thinking to do that but then I say to myself “i might want to wear those…”

  4. alas, i love the frye campus boots — and want to throw them across the room every time i wear them. they were fine in the beginning, weirdly enough, and something changed halfway through — i literally cannot walk a block in them now without massive pain. it’s like they’re too tight across my foot and too loose in the heel. such a shame because so many frye shoes/boots look awesome, and i’ve just concluded my foot is not meant for them.
if anyone has any suggestions for a frye substitute, i’d love to hear them.

  5. I agree that the Frye campus boot is genius! I’ve had mine for years and actually bought a second pair in another color. As a teacher, I don’t have that kind of expendable cash for frivolous purchases, so you know these babies are totally worth it. And they just get better with age. Every time I wear them, even years later, people stop me to look a them and ask where I bought them. Keep the boots if you can afford to. Great purchase!

  6. i bought that bunny ring.. yes it’s beautiful and enormous BUT just to warn you – it gave me a green ring around my finger the first day i wore it.

  7. I’m also looking forward to Fall for the boots!!! I love Frye boots (have the ‘Nora’ in purple). They are amazingly comfortable, and go with everything.

  8. I bought my Frye campus boots four years ago to reward myself after a tough break-up. OMG. They have now gone with me all over the country, from strutin’ Brooklyn streets to walking wooded trails in Washington State. The leather almost feels like an extension of my leg now, but they did need some break-in time. It’s time for mine to be resoled and reheeled (or a new pair bought) and I am not hesitating to spend the cash on either/ both. So worth it!
Also, Campus boots are still made in the USA, though Frye has started outsourcing some of its other shoes and boots. Enjoy!
