strong>March 5:
We love Madewell. We like Shopbop. Madewell + Shopbop should = happiness. And yet: these jeans—and believe us, we're not completely against the new-old denim aesthetic—but: how much? $80? Since they're all beat up and everything? $100, because surely it's lovely, premium denim? $150? Maybe it's sewn with gold thread? No. $200.
We're not entirely against shelling out when shelling out is required: We have an entirely too-light winter coat—er, jacket—that cost exactly that much. We think it is really just the visual mismatch of distressed jeans that cost $200. It is a sad reality that this sort of formerly innocuous (still annoying, but mostly innocuous) disconnect wouldn't have as so offensive even a year ago. But: Shit changes. And it's just, like, is it us? Or is it 2007 in here? And of course the original Madewell still doesn't have e-commerce.
Honestly. We're going to J. Crew now.
Above: Madewell for Shopbop ex-boyfriend jeans, $200
One of our very favorite designers. There is basically no way on the planet that we couldn’t love this. See more from Alyson here
It's the dress we've been looking for, plus a Kooba sample sale, and the best from the CFDA. Click here for today's sale spectacular.
That is synergy! Honestly, we only cared about the dresses this year. And—eh? No? Besides the fact that Alicia Keys and Natalie Portman were sort of wearing the same dress?
We will say in the couples sweepstakes that we think John Legend and the woman identified as "date" totally beat all the rest of them, including Brangelina, which IOO looked a little vampirish, no?
We also felt that Robert Downey Jr.'s wife looked fetching. Why is his tuxedo so shiny? We have no idea.
In the vaguely shiny-and-noirish category, we go with Queen Latifah, who looks sleek. What's up with all the belts this year? Millions of belts.
Speaking of: SJP's boobs look like they've been put on a plate. We're still wrapping our head around these, so to speak. We love that minty color, tho. And Marisa Tomei! God bless the woman, making 45-year-old strippers completely credible.
Personally, we would have rather seen Anne Hathaway in something a bit bright, and Kate W., we love her, so we will not complain.
Our choice: Development. Click here for details.
In today's Reader Mail:
Dear BS,
I hope you will indulge me, as I'm making a survey. Can you have people report on the perfumes they own? I'm looking for a new one.
Love,
R.
Indeed! We recently found at least a temporary signature scent. If you can share a signature scent with the other 20 million people who bought the exact same one. (There's just no pride in the enterprise, we think.) We've always been a bit meh on fragrance: It failed to register as a daily necessity. But then we were working at Nylon in December, and one of the editors who sat next to us smelled absolutely divine every single morning. And we were just like: What a nice thing! Like bringing cupcakes into the office! And so, our own search began.
It ended with Coco Chanel, above. We were desperate. We like it. We don't love it. We usually go for more, er, narrative ones, like this CB I Hate Perfume. Something told us it was time for something slightly more perfume-y. Coco eau de toilette, $65
Above: CB I Hate Perfume to see a flower, $60
What else is everyone wearing? And who has ideas for making it last longer than five minutes?
We do not love them, but we feel someone else out there may. Marc by Marc Jacobs rubber ballet flats, were $160, now $59
Our pick for the day: Stella McCartney for LeSportsac. Click here for details….
So today we engaged in the sort of soul-crushing phone call you can only experience with a company that was once very excited to offer you a credit card—specifically, in our case, Bank of America. Which we hate. More than anything. More than hate itself. They keep forgetting to mail us a replacement card—hey, no problem here, it means we don't spend anything on it. Without it, we can't pay online. So we call them every month, remind them that they forgot to send us a card, and compel them to process our phone payment without charging us a $14.95 fee. This has been going on, without too much aggravation, for nearly a year now. Until today. When we were told that even though Bank of America still hasn't bothered to send us a replacement card—thus making it possible for us to pay online—we would, from now on, be charged that pesky phone fee.
These conversations are good in some ways—specifically in the way where you're like, I don't care if I have to put all my stuff on eBay, I'm going to find $1200 and pay those motherfuckers off so I never have to talk to them again.
We contrast this conversation with those we occasionally have with American Express, which are almost always efficient, courteous, and productive. (There are also a billion other reasons why Amex is our card of choice.) Anyhoo: We thought it might be worth compiling a list of companies which are so terrible that they should be avoided at all costs. Maybe other people have had positive experiences, but we would add Bank of America to that list. And T-Mobile. Did you know that if your payment's late, it's literally impossible to speak to a live representative on the phone? You have to make a payment first with the automated system. Even if it's a day late and you've been meaning to call because they triple-billed you for something stupid again. Pay first, or talk to the computer.
Anyway: We'd love to know if other people had other anti-recommendations to make, so as to warn the others and make the life a bit better. Our list: Bank of America, T-Mobile, and Bank of America again. Also, we have no idea why free-standing BCBG stores (at least the one nearest us) won't accept any returns whatsoever—especially when we can get the same thing (with a much better, which is to say, "a") return policy at Bloomingdales.
We only put that picture up there to remind ourselves that this is our least favorite fashion week of all time. Including you, Cynthia Steffe. We'd love to know which other brands everyone else is avoiding.
