We were recently in a Madewell store and thought: We could just wear these clothes for the rest of the spring. Their website is still driving us insane—function! if you have to choose one, please choose that one instead of form!—and we wish they’d get the online shopping together, but we love all the neutrals plus the pops of yellow. When the new US Topshop opens up next door the Broadway + Canal Madewell, it’s going to be our favorite shopping block ever.

Here’s a link to their locations—more now than there used to be. Now we add: We were recently in our cabinet, where we found three Madewell tees in promotional (but adorable) Madewell t-shirts in their t-shirt sacks (not good for much else—we don’t want to oversell them, though they’d be great for separating bras + stuff in a suitcase.) We’ll pick three winners from today’s commenters—just do us one favor and tell us where you’d shop if you had to shop at only that store for the next three months. And Balenciaga doesn’t count, unless you’re all trust fund-y.

anthropologie, that is if i lived in a town that had one
-
and since i don’t.. basic boutique (online, their markdowns!)
i’d probably go with target! everything i need under one roof? yes please. and the clothes and designer lines are getting better and better.
Can I say gap.com b/c then I can hop onto old navy, piperlime, and bananna republic from the same site? (That plus the free shipping my credit card with them affords me keeps me coming back to them.)
Otherwise, probably target.
Since, I’m on a self-enforced shopping hiatus, and it isn’t possible for me to actually shop…I’d go with Dear Fieldbinder (cute winter stuff on sale, and spring dresses to come!).
Target, for sure. It is seriously like my Disneyland. I’m going on vacation in a few weeks and I’ll be loading up on dresses, shoes and accessories from there. It’s pretty impossible for me to leave Target without spending over $100. But $100 goes so far there! I got two pairs of shoes recently for under $25. Basic black pumps and oxford looking pumps. Perfect for the office.
Sigh. Banana sale rack. The only place I can get pants that are long enough AND fit my butt, as well as tees and sweaters (for me and my husband both).
For three months, I could shop only at JCrew. I’d stock up on yummy cashmere and lots of winter coats. I’d probably get sick of it after a few months, but that’s a risk I am willing to take
Anthropologie if it were near me; since it isn’t, I guess J Crew or Nordstrom.
I second your frustration about the Madewell website – get an e-shop already! I’m patiently waiting for the Boston store to open (it’s been “coming soon” for ages).
Assuming we’re talking about clothes-shopping, I would pick TJ Maxx, because I know which ones have the good inventory in my area. The merch is constantly being updated. I don’t have a lot to spend but I can always find at least one designer steal.
I’d probably say American Apparel…yes, despite my reservations, the creepy ads, and everything. It’s cold right now and I’m all about the layering of basics, something that you can do cheaply, easily, and funly (err, with lots of fun) with AA stuff.
“the rest of the spring” — this suggests that there has already been some spring! If only this were the case. I am not looking forward to the BLAST OF ARCTIC AIR that is supposed to be coming my way starting this afternoon, nor am I enjoying the piles of hillocky, dirty, unshoveled snow that lie between my house and my work. These make it difficult to pull off the adorable outfits I would like to be wearing.
As for where I would shop for the next three months: if only I lived in New York, the answer would certainly be Uniqlo. Since I don’t, I would pick Bird, though I know that this would mean that I’d only get to buy a thing or few during the period in question.
hmm, that’s a tough one. i’ll have to say anthroplogie…but i would probably become one of those women who only wear dresses.
If this is the definition of “shop” that includes food and tile cleaner and the like, then I pick Super Target. Where else can I get onions and Isaac Mizrahi in the same checkout lane?
(If Muji carried fresh produce, they would have totally won over Target.)
If this is just for clothes, then I want Uniqlo. Although I’ve never had anything from there fall apart in less than two years, so I might not do very much shopping in those three months.
Nordstrom Rack! I’m addicted to the one near my office.
If online counts:
Bluefly.com
It makes me really happy. Mainly because it doesn’t matter what season it is, they have everything! Winter, who cares? I can still go there and buy something colorful and fun, and living in Houston I can say that sundresses are not out of the question in January! It was 80 degrees here the other day!
If online doesn’t count:
Zara
http://www.zara.com/#/es_ES/top_zara/woman/
I could shop for anything there. Clothes for work, relaxing, going out, anything! AND it’s very affordable and, even though I do love Forever 21, the clothes are more sophisticated and you don’t have to dig through as much crap to get to the good stuff!
Without a doubt, Zara would be my go-to store if I could only shop at one store for three months. You can find anything from work-attire to evening dresses, as well as comfortable and chic basics to wear on days off. The clothes are also surprisingly good quality, considering the affordable prices of the store (when compared to H&M and F21, say…).
Jcrew
Ross for sure! It’s my favorite favorite store… they have clothes, purses, shoes, etc., plus home stuff (decor, furniture, linens), even a toy section! They have everything but food. (Unless you count the specialty chocolates, coffee, and Jelly Belly beans… plus I’m sure they’ve got some kind of crazy good beef jerky in there somewhere so, heck yes I could live off that store!)
Oh, J. Crew! I got a lot of good stuff that was on rediculous sale before Christmas, and I can’t wait to see what’s cheap now that we’re done with the holiday season. And I really like the spring colors – all pale and neutrally, but with bits of pink and yellow.
At Soda in Bangkok.
For here, Bloomingdales. Cute dresses, lots of shoes, and lots of 40% off sales pretty often, even before recesionista became a buzzword.
I third the thoughts on Madewell not having online shopping yet. Enough already!
I was thinking I’d also go with Anthro… but if forced to pick only one store for 3 months, I’d go local and pick my favorite shop in Baltimore – DoubleDutch Boutique (http://www.doubledutchboutique.com/about/). They have lots of lesser known designers at a surprisingly low price-point… not to mention, the greatest jewelery, purses, and shoes.
It would have to be 4eva 21. I could get lost there for hours. It carries clothes for your lazy days, fancy days, sophisticated days, serious days, fun days, whatever you feel days. It carries clothes for every mood, every occasion, every trend and because they are so cheap it makes it easier to try out the trends.
Wow, those outfits look great!
I’d have to pick revolveclothing.com -a little bit of everything (high to low, undies to leather jackets).
If I could only shop at one store for that long I would say somewhere like Joanne Fabrics. I’ve owned the Sew U books for quite a while now and even though I’ve always wanted to actually make something, I always end up spending my time and money shopping online. Since no single store has everything I like, and all kinds of designers give me inspiration, I’d make my own simple skirts and tops out of pretty prints!
I work and have kids – one of which is always taking my car – so my shopping is pretty much confined to my computer. So I pick EBAY! There I can buy clothes I could never afford. Plus I am all about the “treasure”…where you find that little something for nothing and it comes and is fabulous! Of course, I ended up with a pair of copper cowboy boots that way…but you can always re-sell!
I have to say my choice would be Madewell’s big sister: J Crew.
Har- and I know I could go the whole three months because a cursory glance at my on-line bank statement reveals that it’s very close to the only clothing retailer I have visited since the start of fall!
Their on-line shopping interface is a doddle to use, and although individual pieces can feel very plain I look to the catalogue for ways to put them together that are both beautiful and interesting.
Just this weekend a friend and I scavenged the sale racks of the NYC Chelsea store, stuff marked down by more than 50% I would say, and a wide selection of things (summer/winter, clothes/accessories) too! As we were leaving my friend whispered “at these prices I feel like I’m STEALING from them!”
ALSO: their coats are the best thing for the coming “arctic blast”- get them lined with Thinsulate (option available on-line) and you will never look back.
Thrift Town.
OH YEAH LOLA!
EBAY!
I just got a pair of three hundred dollar Gee WaWa black leather boots for thirty bucks!
LOVE LOVE LOVE Ebay!
Express. They have great jeans, their spring stuff is so bright and colorful, and they have casual and dressy stuff. Plus: box sales!
Loehmann’s! Perfume, Shampoo, bags, shoes, and clothes…all for discounted prices. I just bought a pair of wide-leg sevens for all mankind for seventeen dollars! Or, Zara.
Shopbop! They have everything.
Value Village – the best thrift store bar none. I’d drive the 3 hrs down to the dc area periodically *just* to go to VV to “pillage” as my best friend and I call it. one stop (actually three different ones now, including one new annex so mammoth we refer to it as the Double Wide) with endless cheap vintage finds, including cookware. mint condition le creuset? it happens.
Forever 21. I think that if I COULDN’T shop there for the next three months I’d go insane.
Forever 21. I think that if I COULDN’T shop there for three months I’d go insane.
Club Monaco. They have all of the staples, plus some really avant-garde pieces. They are my go-to for all things gamine. Not to mention that their prices are comparable with Banana, but I find the Club Monaco look to be more refined.
One of my New Years resolutions is a 3 month shopping fast. So I would have to say that I am currently shopping my own closet.
Hopefully when I am “allowed” to shop again, I will also be a size or two smaller (another resolution)!
I think I’m done with shopping for a while due to the recession, however, if I lived in New York City, I’d pick Uniqlo. I visited a while ago and was amazed by how cheap the stores was. I love artsy Japanese tees, and the skinny jeans. Additionally, Uniqlo has collaborations with upcoming designers. What’s not to love?
salvation army
.. an eccentric variety
I’m also currently on a shopping-hiatus, but if I could only shop at one store, it would be Uniqlo (especially since it would also mean trips to NY or Asia)
Since I doubt I’ll be able to shop much in the next few months, I’d probably stick to finding a deal or two on (of all places) overstock.com.
Buffalo Exchange! Or is that cheating?
Seriously, it’s fun and affordable (well, more affordable than regular ol’ retail). Searching for those perfectly priced gems is half the fun.
hm, it’s probably the gap/oldnavy sites since they’re linked.
Eep, it’s still Jan 13 where I am…first time I’ve come across this site, and I’m glad I did!
UNIQLO, definitely, if I lived in New York. I loved their Alexander Wang collection, and their basics are all sorts of wearable.
Honestly, probably H&M. I am a sucker for quantity over quality (I know…**shame**). If I’m shopping there and only there, I need to be able to afford more than one stupid scarf.
J. Crew
Barney…I know, Barney’s isn’t exactly non trustfundy, but have you seen the sale going on right now? They have denim as low as $39! There’s a pretty cute long puffy jacket for $59. So, they do have some good deals right now.
For how long the sale is going to be there? Please let me know. Thanks!!
