Today’s Style Icon

So we watched Annie Hall this weekend. We remember being such Woody Allen fans growing up, and we’re pretty sure Manhattan is still one of our favorite movies. But we were just totally grossed out by Woody Allen this time: We know that he and Diane Keaton had a real-life relationship and were just all, ewewewew. It’s still so funny in pieces (sneezing on the coke, etc.) but we just found him pathetic, like when he’s like, I lerf you. Ugh. Guys!

Anyway, we were much more impressed with Annie’s \ Diane’s wardrobe. We forgot how fun it was. Thirty years later it totally holds up.

  1. I love Diane Keaton! I do feel totally inspired by the way she dresses in a lot of movies as well as real life (she’s obviously very modest, but she doesn’t look prudish-just like she marches to the beat of her own drummer) but I do have difficulty trying to emulate her style in real life. any suggestions?

  2. What you might not know is that when the movie came out it set off a big trend–lots of people started dressing like that. But, Shellybean, my suggestion is don’t try! So much of that Annie Hall style looked good on her, and not a lot of other people! If you’re talking about now, then, the thing to emulate is simply–as you pointed out–marching to your own drummer, and NOT following trends.

  3. I think Diane Keaton looked great in her menswear look–back then. When she wears it now, it’s tantamount to 45-year-old women who still feather their hair and wear frosty pink lip gloss like they did when they first got laid in a Camaro. It really dates her. I disagree with the anonymous comment, though: Try the menswear look, but try it in a fresh, new way. Oxford booties/shooties and wideleg pants may be a good place to start emulating the look without looking like you’re shopping from someone else’s old closet.

  4. Okay, so am I the only one who actually HATES this style. While I DO like menswear worn in a girlie way, and I understand it is totally derivative from DK/AH, i find it to be VERY unalluring. To be specific, I am talking about the ill-fitting khackis and the vest and the hat look from above. I actually detest this look quite deeply.

  5. I like the menswear look, personally… just not the puffy pleated pants. Those do zip for me. Okay, that was a bad pun.
Also, your ad link to Zeny’s Boutique has an extra W in it.

  6. Who among you has worn a tie and a hat within the same ensemble? I find this not to be effortlessly chic.

  7. I think she looks cute, but I wouldn’t emulate her directly. I do love menswear-inspired looks, though.
And I have the biggest, most absurd crush on Woody Allen.

  8. She is a fabulous trend setter. I remember reading in interview with her, discussing her Annie Hall outfits. DK said they were all her own clothing, she dressed herself. Her tie was from her grandfather, etc. What an icon, indeed. No stylist, no fashionistas. Her own freaking closet. THAT is style.
