We’re keeping the magic alive here this week with more amazing reader mail questions—again, we’re measuring contest success by the number of comments this time, so the author of the post with the most comments wins a super excellent Jocasi bag. Clearly earlier posts have a comment-gathering advantage, so if you have a reader mail entry for us, be sure to send it over, stat!
Today’s entry is from S.:
What are your favorite staple clothing items—the kind of thing you buy five of in every color or multiple versions of because they’re so perfect for you that you never want to wear them out/run out in case they get discontinued—horrors! Mine would be:
- American Apparel tri-blend v-neck shirts
- These Demise skinny jeans from Forever 21 (above, $29.80) that are awesomely fitted yet stretchy and look like vintage Levi’s—but updated!
- Flats from Rainbow
All we will say about this is that we seem to be a new American Apparel hoodie every time we lose ours—though we are hoping we will stem the losing thing now that we’ve embroidered a giant Gothic-print D on the chest.
Also, black Havaianas, even though our current ones seem to have been infested by some sort of trip-inducing evil spirit.
Tell us yours!

my havaianas make me trip *all the time* too.
gap jeans. (have boatloads, in multiple fits and washes.)
gap bikini undies. (yes, i wear unsexy cotton undies. they’re comfy!)
liz lange maternity tees from target (the lycra keeps them from getting that “cotton tee” stretch-out, plus the long length is great).
reef “ginger” sandals. sometimes the havaianas won’t cut it.
After buying my fourth pair of Havaianas, I realized I might have a problem.. also, tops by Velvet.
I love love love long tank tops from Old Navy. I have about 10 in black, and a few in other colors. I wear them under things, by themselves, to the gym, etc.
There’s no particular brand or item I adore, but I do have a uniform that I can’t live without:
Tank tops and jeans (summer).
Tees, cardigan, and jeans (winter).
Spring and fall are some combination of the above.
things i would swim through sharks for:
any pair of jeans that looks and fits like vintage Levis.
especially if they only cost $29.80. (thanks S!)
j. crew argyle cardigans.
black rainbow flip flops.
vintage brown leather belts.
I heart:
Cheap Mondays
oxford shirts from H&M
AA Summer Shirts and
Ferragamo bow pumps!!
I have about 20 pairs of havaianas right now in like every color and can’t get enough. Who knew I could be so in love with a flipflop.
I swear by my Converse collection!
I always buy hats that I never wear. But as for things I DO wear, I have a thing for cheap pharmacy flip flops. I buy them all the time, wear them for one weekend, do irreparable damage to my feet, throw them out, and buy another pair. It’s a viscious cycle!
I am glad to know that I am not just clumsy!! I am constantly tripping in my havianas too.
Can’t live without:
* Havianas in the summer. Must have a pair handy by the door at all times.
* Dansko clogs in the winter. Must have a pair handy by the door at all times.
* I am always looking for the perfect white and/or black tees. Long sleeved in the cooler months, short sleeved in the winter. I like the Old Navy Perfect Fit tees but I still tend to buy them where ever I am. It might be the PERFECT one. Even though I have PLENTY.
* I am also obsessed with Kenneth Cole jewelry. I have about 20 different bracelets (thank you , ebay) yet keep buying them.
1. Black yoga pants from Old Navy (they’re perfect!)
2. The “Cowboy” jeans from J Crew (which are discontinued and I really would do anything to buy more of them!)
3. Tony & Tina glitter eye liner (also discontinued, thank God I stocked up)
S should definitely grab onto multiple pairs…i just did the same with a couple pairs of straight fit summer-weight pants that keep getting little tears, but look pretty rad anyway.
I’m a little obsessed with Urban Outfitters brand skinny jeans, which don’t look nearly as good as my Diesels but are twice as comfy and half the price.
Also:
-Banana Republic Stretchy shirts (especially if on sale)
-black flats (I’ll try any brand)
-F21 dresses. OBSESSED with ‘em. I go there at least once a week for more throwaway dresses!
1. an old and worn in white t-shirt to be worn with…
2. long and dangly gold necklaces. the cheaper the better. forever 21 is perfect for these
3. american apparel high waisted leggings
- BROWN, WORN-IN COWBOY BOOTS. i buy ‘em cheap on ebay, wear them out, then buy again.
- jersey dresses. preferably turtleneck.
- (Black) Hardtail yoga pants. they make everything look perfect, are soft, can be dressed up.
- Old Navy flip flops.
- Men’s V-neck white t-shirts. Makes people wonder if i’m wearing an undershirt – in a good way.
-Denim skirts (I have three, they’re all slightly different), and miniskirts in general
-American apparel stuff, especially tri-blend stuff and colorful tank tops
-Tights (can never have enough, esp. b/c they always snag)
-Ballet flats (must be comfy)
-Interesting necklaces, pick up lots at thrift stores
-Cardigans
–TOMS shoes…they’re so comfy and for every pair you buy, they donate a pair to a kid in Africa
–rainbow sandals…although mine are framed now because i wore them out so much…need a new pair stat!
–men’s “wife beaters”…despite the bad rep, they pretty much go with everything
–vintage-y sundresses
–zip-up hoodie i’ve had since i was 17
If these were people, we’d be lovers
Black stockings that will go under every single one of my million skirts
Any sort of vintage leather oxfords/schoolboys/loafers
AA U-Neck Bandage dress
Recent loves
1. Straight 77 jeans from ae in black.
2. Hanes mens v neck t shirts
3. old navy flip flops.
Denim skirts…..
Tights Jeans…
Interesting necklaces…Perfumes…Sandals…Jackets…
super soft, jcrew ribbed tank tops in every color… so perfect on their own in the summer, or layered with anything at all!
i also have a ton of long cardigans in various colors, mostly from gap and h&m.
oh and calvin klein bras!! they are my absolute favorite, i DO stock up because i’m afraid they’ll be discontinued!
Havaianas
J.Crew tank tops
Lululemon hoodie
Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner
I’m seeing a bit of a pattern in the comments here. Guess we all have good taste.
Very great and cool look….
a beat up pair of grey-brown bootcut jeans with no recognizable brand stitching
Target tank tops from 3 years ago
Orangey-red suede flats
peanut-colored almond toe heels
cotton shirt dresses I always find at my favorite suburban thrift store (the worn out, self made kind)
open faced lockets I find on ebay
frame-top handbags
a phthalo blue kenneth cole knee length wool coat that I sewed in the back so it’s super fitted
friggin’ american eagle keeps discontinuing the things i LOVE. artist jeans? gone. replaced with lame jeans. lame.
thankfully, their boyfriend tanks are fabulous and appease my desire for tanktops that aren’t 1) racerback 2)too tight 3) too short and are 1) good for under things 2) good by themselves 3) only vaguely see-through.
i’m lost and alone without a pair of black patent pumps, and that may soon intensify since my cheap ones are wearing out. (thank you for a year of service, wet seal pumps. you’ve done your duty) really, heels in general are pretty necessary. i do have the shortest legs in the world, after all.
also i’m pretty much hopeless without a pair of big sunglasses in black and tortoise shell and a good ol’ pair of aviators.
This is a GREAT blog…thanks for sharing!
Its a great blog..i m impressed by your writing style..keep the good working.
I can’t live without:
- Havaianas flip flops
- Converse Chucks
- Converse Jack Purcells
- American Apparel EVERYTHING THAT IS TRI-BLEND, but especially the Unisex crew neck T-shirts
- Forever 21 cheapo dresses and skinny jeans
- H&M boys’ zip-up hoodies
I agree with Kelly’s post above, American Eagle keeps changing their jeans. I have a pair of straight 77s that I’ve worn half to death and the four pairs of straight 77′s that I’ve bought since have not come close to fitting as well. In fact, the last pair I ordered I can’t even wear because they’re huge in the thighs and way too short despite being the exact same size I’ve ordered three times before. It’s really disappointing. Then after thinking about the boyfriend jean for ages, I finally ordered a pair online and they’re not relaxed and slouchy like I remembered them at all – they were exactly like any other pair of bootcut jeans. Grrr!!
