Meat Loaf and Tiffany for Go Phone

We do not endorse Go Phone. We do absolutely endorse this commercial for it with Meat Loaf and Tiffany. It’s so genius when you’re just like, ‘My dad’s Meat Loaf?’ It could totally happen.

From a J. Crew Window

We are pretty sure that we do not know a single five-year-old girl who should be dressed as Jackie Onassis in the embellished shift dress. Argh.

Reader Mail: The Dinner Cruise

We got this letter this morning, and we are happy to finally see some reader mail! We love it so. Send us more! Here! Anyway.

Hi Lil Bunny,

What would you wear to a
"dinner cruise" (read booze cruise) in St. Petersburg, FL (this
Saturday?!!!)  It says "casual cruise wear."  What does this mean to
you?  I know it implies comfortable, but I am stumped on the cruisewear
part, since, I’m embarrassed to say, I have not really left NY for some
time and I never have been on a cruise, per se…  Do I have
to wear some sort of open toe shoe or sandal?  (For some reason,
I envision one of the sandals accidentally getting kicked off my foot
and sailing over the rail, into the sea…)  I think definitely a
hoodie because it is at night and might get cold…  As you can see, I
am overthinking this and am quite confused and need help!  Thanks.

Harmonyca

Now, we have never been on a dinner (or booze) cruise. We’ve been on proper cruises (we sang for the Bahamanian government, it was as awkward as it sounds. That’s been our only experience with boats. But we’re always game for a challenge! And, we actually know people who go on these things fairly often. We would interpret ‘casual cruise wear’ to mean sundresses, that sort of thing. We are very aware that you have little time, so here are our picks from readily available retailers.

Above, J. Crew. We think J. Crew is perfect for this kind of event. It’s dressy without being TOO dressy, and we’ve owned a few of this dress and can attest to its comfort level. We definitely do not think you are required to wear an open toe shoe – we would fear falling out of our shoes and falling overboard. We’d probably wear this with gold flats, and we’d definitely bring a hoodie because we get cold.

And, this dress is on sale. We think the belt is a little weird, which is just as well because it’s sold separately. It also comes in a white/brown colorway (called pinecone!) that we like.

Embossed Strapless Beach Dress, was $118, now $78

Ok, this dress has HORSES on it. We love it for that alone. We’re a little unsure about the super, super deep v – we would not feel entirely comfortable in it, but we’d layer a tank top underneath because we’re modest (and because we do that with just about everything). We really like the waist detailing, and we like how this dress is just FUN. We’d wear this with our nicest Havianas and a hoodie. Maybe even a bow in our hair. Before you’re like, where the hell would I ever wear a horse dress, let us say that we would wear this EVERYWHERE.

Gallup Halter Dress, $198

We know this looks a bit trashy for, well, most things. But we’ve tried this dress on (in our proper size, unlike the young lady in the photo) and it is not nearly as scandalous as it looks here. The addition of proper undergarments helps that, too. It’s really comfortable, quite soft, dressed up without being dressy. And depending on what shoes you wear, you can really fancy it up (or keep it low key).  If you’re worried about being cold/naked, you can also add an easy pair of tights for some warmth.

American Apparel Melange Funnel Neck Dress, $34

If none of these are to your liking, we’d strongly recommend checking out your local Anthropologie. We’re having issues linking to them, but we know their assortment and styles quite well – and basically any dress they have (or skirts, or pants, even) will fit the bill here.

Anyone else have experience with these kind of events? Leave us comments with more ideas!

Have fun!

Our Great Summer Recipe Compendium, Continued: Strawberry Shortcake-ish

The next recipe is from S. It’s the last one for today, but don’t miss part one!

My favorite summer recipe is a strawberry shortcake sorta thing with hot milk cake. I found the recipe on epicurious and it is le awesome!

Ingredients

Nonstick vegetable oil spray
2 extra-large eggs
2/3 cup plus 1/2 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract, divided
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons self-rising flour
2/3 cup whole milk
5 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 pound large strawberries, hulled, thinly sliced lengthwise
1/2 cup chilled heavy whipping cream
1 tablespoon powdered sugar

Preparation

Preheat oven to 425°F. Spray six 3/4-cup custard cups with nonstick spray. Using electric mixer, beat eggs in medium bowl at high speed until thick, about 3 minutes. Gradually beat in 2/3 cup sugar; beat until thick and pale yellow, about 1 minute longer. Beat in 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Add flour and beat 30 seconds. Bring milk and butter just to boil in small saucepan, stirring until butter melts. Add hot milk mixture to batter; beat until blended and smooth, about 30 seconds. Divide batter among prepared cups. Place cups on rimmed baking sheet.

Bake cakes until tops rise (tall rounded peak will form in center of each), turn pale golden, and are firm to touch, about 16 minutes. Cool in cups at least 20 minutes. DO AHEAD: Can be made 8 hours ahead. Cool completely in cups, then cover and let stand at room temperature.

Toss strawberries and remaining 1/2 cup sugar in medium bowl to coat; let stand 20 minutes for juices to form. Using electric mixer, beat cream, powdered sugar, and remaining 1/4 teaspoon vanilla in another medium bowl until peaks form.

Remove warm or room-temperature cakes from cups and transfer to bowls. Cut off rounded top of each cake.

Spoon some of berries and juices over. Cover berries with tops of cakes. Spoon whipped cream over, garnish with remaining berries and juices, and serve.

Above: We swear, we only buy premium denim during sales. Hudson jeans, were $176, now $123.20

Oh Jocasi

They’ve done it again. We know, we know, we know. We keep talking about them. But it’s impossible not to, especially when they just continually put out products that we drool over. It’s like some kind of wretched Pavlovian response, but with happy ends and nice handbags.

We’ve been talking about scaling down our wallet, and our first thought was this odd little pouch from another designer (that we talked about like, a hot minute ago). We like it a lot, but the color we like is seriously available in one store in California. Who does that? AND someone that we’re closely related to wisely said, ‘hmph. If it wasn’t Marc Jacobs you’d not like it’. She’s right, but we were still like must! downsize!

Well, leave it to Jocasi to give us the best option ever. The Mini Moon Wallet is perfect. Excellent color selection (we’re really feeling the red and tan), ideal sizing (large enough not to lose, and to function as proper wallet without being large enough to hold losing lottery tickets and bits of scrap paper), and best of all? It’s on sale! And we just got word that Jocasi is offering free shipping WORLD WIDE.  We love Jocasi so much that it’s almost embarrassing. Next time we go to London, we may have to visit their offices, but we’re not sure we can handle it.

Mini Moon Wallet, was $110, now $66

Bunnies in Pop

Pop did our absolute favorite bunny fashion spread ever last year. That bunny was alive. This bunny, from the current Pop, is not. Our feelings are mixed. Plus: We love that leather corsage from Giles. Con: This bunny is dead. Like we said, mixed.

Not our favorite issue ever—too much Stephanie Seymour!—but our love lives on.

Alternative: This Week’s Discount!

ThumbnailHave we mentioned our love for Ellen DeGeneres lately? This is why: We were watching Oprah, and she was being all terrifying and judge-y, and we just couldn’t take one more minute of worrying about things, so we switched on Ellen, and she was dancing and Lupe Fiasco was singing. It was like opening one door to February and the other to May. We choose May! We choose May!

Conveniently, she has been spotted wearing this tee from Alternative—where, incredibly conveniently, we’ve lined up this week’s discount! Twenty percent off: meaning that this tonal stripe tee was $28 but with discount code "bunnyshop" is only $22.40. Hurrah!

Organic Cotton: The Round-Up

We are so torn by J. Brand’s new organic cotton mini-line! ("Mini" as in two choices.) Why are they not skinny? Why? We don’t, we just don’t get it. We’re shaking our head, and moving on. Luckily, we’re totally into this idea of wide(ish)-legged jeans at the moment, but we don’t know why you don’t make your big eco move with your brand-signature style.

We love this dress. We wish it were a couple inches shorter, but otherwise, we’re in organic-cotton love. Linda Loudermilk wrap dress, $280

(Not organic cotton, but in hemp:) Like the dress above, from Beklina, one of our new favorite sites. Hand-printed scarves, $45

C&C California have a load of organic-cotton tops (as we would suspect they might), of which this is our favorite. C&C California organic cotton dress, $110

This tote bag design is a little bit more … hippy than we tend to go, but lately we’ve been watching a lot of Jesus Christ Superstar so maybe it’s all good. And if we had a nickel for every time we’ve bee called a "free spirit," we’d be writing this from our mansion-house. Organic cotton tote, $29

Our Great Summer Recipe Compendium, Continued: Snow Pudding

The next recipe is from A.—or see the next one, here.

Don’t let the name confuse you. This is an EXCELLENT chilled summer dessert!

Snow Pudding:

2 tablespoon unflavored gelatin
1/4 cup cold water
1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup lemon juice
1 cup sugar
3 egg whites

Soak gelatin in cold water, dissolve in boiling water. Add sugar and lemon juice. Stir until mixture thickens, then add to stiffly beaten egg whites. Beat until thick enough to stack- be sure the gelatin mixture doesn’t settle to the bottom!!! (or as Mom says "Beat like h—!").

Refrigerate.

Custard Sauce
1 cup milk
3 egg yolks
3 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
pinch salt

Scald milk in double boiler. Add sugar and salt to slightly beaten egg yolks. Combine 2 mixtures and continue cooking until custard coats spoon.

To serve: Spoon "snow" into individual serving dishes. Top with custard. Custard can be served warm or chilled.

See the next recipe here. Above: AG Adriano Goldschmied jeans, were $168, now $117.60
