So speaking of Out of Africa and the book we’ve been trying to read for three months and just, apparently, lost, we shot this little thing above (on our tiny PowerShot!) in Kenya. All these kids lived in the most terrible placeāif you saw The Constant Gardener, and we strongly, strongly recommend that you do if you have not already), you’ve seen it, Kibera. Anyway, we were there with this organization that built the community room where they put on their performance, and feeds all the people in the neighborhood who are HIV+, which is a lot of them.
Anyway: Part of what the community organizers do is sell necklaces like these. Excuse the bad flash, but we like the ones in the middle.
We are thinking we will buy a whole bunch, jack up the price (from basically nothing), and then give them all the profits back. We’re wondering: those necklaces. If you hate them, don’t tell us. If you like them, do. And how much you might spend on one, if you would, especially if all the money were going (and it would be going) to a good cause.
We have that necklace with the chevron-type stripes, and we certainly do not mind saying that we wear it all the time with a tank top, skinny jeans and boots.
This is one of the little girls living there, and that this organization, made up of women from the community, helps out. Adorable. Adorable sweater. So if you like the necklace, let us know.

I have a necklace like the ones on the far right. Its green and white and I think my mom made it when she was a girl scout camp counselor. But anyway, I like it.
I like it too. Especially the chevron and the other leaf shaped brown one.
Where would you sell them?
They’re wonderful. Things like this make great gifts, too. By the way, here’s another organization doing great things in Kenya (sending young girls to school, AIDS education, developing alternative coming of age rituals [instead of genital mutilation]): beadsforeducation.org . Bunnyshop, please tell us more about your trip to Kenya. A
the necklaces are lovely, handmade, and for a wonderful cause, so it would be a no-brainer here. personally i like the ones on the left, even, a bit simpler. the mix of worldly and clothes-ly goodness that you share with us is absolutely priceless, and makes me feel better when i can help out.
Love the chevron one, and others in the middle. I’d buy several for me and my friends!
