We recently decided to pay for a nice gym. At this nice gym, we have cardio machines with their own LCD/tv screens, complete with headphone jack so we don’t have to hear the ESPN newscast all around us. There’s something to be said for working out to ‘The Simpsons’. This new, fancy gym also has a lovely, large locker room  – and, most importantly, a full schedule of spinning classes. We are new to spinning, though not new to riding our bike. But while we can keep up a decent pace on our bike, we were not, in any way, prepared for spinning. We, generally, do not sweat a whole lot. We can usually rinse off quickly and be on our way. After spinning, we were positively dripping. It was rather filthy.

But, we felt great and we are really excited to go back (especially after eating a rather insane amount of stuffing this weekend). However, this time we are prepared. We are absolutely wearing our cycling shorts. We are, without a doubt, bringing a hand towel with us to wipe sweat off us and the bike – we even purchased two towels just for this. And we are absolutely bringing our newest purchase, the Bliss Sinkside Six Pack, with us. Sure, we could’ve gone to Target and picked up random, travel size things and tossed them into our gym bag. But that wouldn’t have been nearly as much fun. And it wouldn’t be even close to a treat. We know working out is good for us, but honestly, getting sweaty at 6am is a lot easier to stomach when we have something to look forward to afterwards.

Plus, we’ve found that the lemon-sage products from Bliss smell exactly like Lemon Pledge, and that is probably our favorite smell of all time. It’s actually a pretty good deal, and it’d make a great gift for that random present you always end up having to give. And, it’s a really nice way to end a rather grueling hour. We love Bliss, but can rarely justify the cost. This little six pack is like the samples you get from Starbucks – it’s enough to do the trick, and let you make an educated decision about buying the real deal.

We’ve learned more about the publishing industry from the lovely Galley Cat than we did, say, in school, or pretty much anywhere else for that matter, and yesterday they did us the extra-lovely turn of pointing us toward the ongoing—but only today! ends at midnight!—friends \ family sale at our excessively favorited Chronicle Books, which publishes basically every book we want to read \ own. Discount code = “friends” = 30%. Perfect for gifts for self, or others, if we must. Our top picks:

1. Lotta Jansdotter’s Simple Sewing, $24.95, with discount $17.46. Honestly we have wanted this for a billion years, give or take.

2. The Guerrila Art Kit, $24.95, with discount $17.46. Because if we’re not going to get all guerrila about our art, apparently no one on the world is going to miss it, etc. Vive la revolucion d’art! Etc.

3. 20th Century Pattern Design, was $35, with discount, $24.50. Because we are sure if we think about it really, really hard, we can totally be next Marimekko etc.

Some of you posted or emailed us about scheduling an appointment with Diana, our resident hair expert. Presumably for a hair cut or color, as you could just email us any questions you have for her. If you’re interested in getting your hair done by her, email us here! We will put you in touch with her. Yes, of course she is licensed. And we know we have said it before, but we have never, ever had a better haircut. Diana’s a great girl to have around, but she is the most phenomenal hairstylist we’ve ever met.

We’ve had two haircuts by her in the last couple months, and we’ve never felt better. She managed to tame a lifelong cowlick into behaving all the time; she understood our laziness and worked with it (we actually had to buy a blowdryer because the one we have was made in 1984); and best of all, we showed her a bunch of pictures and she took the time to ask what we liked about each one! So, for everyone in the Philadelphia/Lehigh Valley area who need a haircut, email us! We love Diana, and you will too!

Just three more days! Both in November and in Jocasi Discount Month. (One and the same, they are.)

We think this might be the only one we haven’t already shown … so here it is. Lovely, lovely, we think. Also available in tan and black. Erm. Not much to add here, you know?

Boston Dagger bag, about $210, with discount code “bunnyshop,” about $189

So we will be swapping tonight at 6:30—hope this isn’t too early for everyone—at the Booksmith on Upper Haight in SF. Hurrah! This will roll right into the reading at 7. Hopefully we will have all our swapping done by then—if not, we could swap a bit after the reading as well, which we promise will be brief and concise and everything a reading should be. We will have wine! For once. And we will be bringing at least:

- A Marc by Marc Jacobs skirt
- A dress we bought at Anthropologie for a ridiculous amount of money and wore once
- And an adorable Banana Republic coat.

We are thinking there will be quite a bit more, but we thought we’d try to give people a sense of what we’ll be bringing. So: come for the swap! Stay for the reading! And the wine. Obvs.

Tonight!

Here’s this week’s question for our resident hair expert, Diana:

Is there anything to do about frizzy hair in the dry Winter climate? I’ve tried those anti-frizz sprays, and they seem to act like Amorall for hair (leaves my hair greasy looking)… Is there anything that won’t make my head greasy but keep it from looking like I just rubbed a balloon on my head?

Thanks Diana!

Danielle

And Diana’s response:

Hey Danielle!

Isn’t that fuzzy crown of thorns the worst?  If you’re finding it fuzzy just because of the outside temperature and wearing a scarf, I’d say just throw something on there.  Maybe you’re using too much? Really, a tiny dab should suffice.  One product I love for smoothing and shine is Chi’s Silk Infusion.  It’s under $20 and should last you forever, since you really don’t need much.  And if you’re in a pinch a little dollop of hand lotion would even work!  One other thing I cannot recommend enough is sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase.  My hair is overprocessed to the max (why do I keep flip flopping between platinum blonde and really dark hair? will I ever learn? to be continued) and adding that to my routine seems to really have helped! You could wrap your hair in a silk scarf at night, but I find that is difficult to keep on.  Good luck!  And if none of these tips help you, at least take comfort in the fact that everyone else is probably rubbing the tops of their head too and hoping you don’t notice the fuzzies!

And there we have it! Do you have a question for Diana, our most favorite hair expert, and stylist, that we’ve ever met? Send them to us here!

More Cyber Monday, which everyone acknowledges is the worst marketing ploy since … Valentine’s Day! That’s what we were thinking of.

Anyway: Shopbop is doing up to 25% off, depending on how much you’re spending. At this, pre-Xmas-party time of year, when we are still worrying about what we are wearing versus how much we are going to spend on actual presents—it’s like the last gasp before buying for yourself becomes totally guilt-inducing.

We are sort of constantly amazed by how much we like Juicy Couture’s non-velour clothing. Like this dress: Juicy Couture dress, $298 (with discount, if you spend $2 of something else, $248 (+ that something else, because you get a bigger discount if you spend over $300)

We also like that coat: Juicy Couture faux fur coat, $448. If you spend $500, it’s $100 off.

The discount code = GETAJUMP but it’s only good til midnight tonight.

We’re pretty sure whoever’s behind Cyber Monday is also behind, like, bad 7-11 promotions (not that we don’t love 7-11, but you know what we mean). Anyway, there are loads of not-totally-bad promotions out there today, so we thought we’d share: The Apple Store is giving free shipping on all their Gift Guide things. We are a little overly proud of over early adapter status on Apple, but we’ve been a little meh on the shops since we were accosted by perhaps the grumpiest motherfucker in all of Summit, NJ, last year, when we dared to check our email—our dot mac email, no less!—on one of the store computers, nevermind that that is like (a) their fucking business plan and (b) there was an unused, identical computer right next to us. (You can maybe tell that we’re still not over this.)

Anyway: Apple Gift Guide. Free shipping today. Cyber Monday. Sort of WTF, but … free shipping.

Above: 8GB Nano, $149

Gifts! Even nicer when they are purchased for the self. Maybe they are better described as treats. These are like cupcakes. But no annoying calories!

So apparently we’re feeling a bit ADD after the nine 20 oz. Diet Cokes we just drank, but we love these little reindeer—er, they’re calling them deer, but they seem perfectly Blixen-ized to us—and even more, the accompanying Xmas trees. Tiny, holiday-ish treats! Perfectly appropriate before all the real-deal gift-buying sets in.

Set of three deer, about $54

These trees are even nicer in person, btw.

Wooden trees, $20 and up

Now that the holidays are in full swing (as evidenced by hearing ‘Christmas in Hollis’ for the first time this year), all our holiday memories come flooding back. What better time to enter our contest? We’ve already received some really amazing entries, but please continue to enter! Email us here! Please also indicate what hoodie color you’d most prefer. You have until 5pm EST on Monday to enter; after we’ve decided, we’ll contact the winners to get addresses, and hopefully get the ok to post their stories. Anonymously, of course; we wouldn’t want anyone to catch the grief that we caught for our original post.

We’ll also remind you that the prizes are Champion Super Hood hoodies. We’ve been wearing ours nonstop this weekend, and it’s kept us warm in the meat locker-like temperatures our family seems to thrive in. When we were in school, Champion was THE brand to wear; we distinctly remember having several pairs of shorts, a few tshirts, and a sweatshirt or two we absolutely loved. We had a friend who worked at the Champion store near our high school, and we would visit her and be so incredibly jealous. We, at the time, worked at Speedo and felt inferior.

In any case, Champion still is one of the brands we’re always going back to, and we especially love their new photo campaign. You can see it here.

Winners for the contest will be announced (hopefully) tomorrow!
