Our New Craft Project: This Anthropologie Sweater

Inappropriate confidence: This is a feeling we are well acquainted with, and one which afflicts us particularly in the arena of crafts. This sweater, for example: We see it and think: $128! Ha! We could totally buy that sweater at a Goodwill, and then applique those little flower things in like fifteen minutes. We can pretty much guarantee that this project will never come to fruition. We are going to give it a go, however. Fingers crossed!

Here is a close-up:

All we need is our used sweater, and:

Nicky Epstein’s Knitted Embellishments: 350 Appliques, Borders, Cords and More!, $21.09

Or, for when we come to our senses, the original: the Blossom House cardigan, $128

  1. actually, you can crochet those little flowers in like a minute – just type ‘crochet flowers’ into google and you will find an easy pattern (I recently did this for a scarf I refused to pay $50 for.) But I somehow feel that this sweater, which looks cute and quirky from Anthropologie, may look Granny-gone-wild when attempted as a DIY project (much like jeweled sweaters sometimes look nice in magazines at Christmas, but when you try them at home, it looks like someone went crazy with the BeDazzler.)

  2. I have the same reaction to such things. Keep us posted on how it works out. Maybe you will have a future on Etsy!!! And inspire the rest of us. I have to say I have had good luck with seeing jewelry I love and re-creating it for a reasonable amount.

  3. That is a very cute sweater. Just make sure the time and effort you put into it doesn’t wind up equaling the price of the original! You know, your labor is worth something too.

  4. I feel like a tool now, but I bought that Anthropologie sweater. I love it but know my crafty limitations. It’s beautiful in person and I know I could never manage to recreate it.

  5. I am actually pretty sure that the flowers in questions ARE crocheted, not knitted. Which is good for you, because it will be way faster. :)
