In case it isn’t obvious, we love reader mail. Because, honestly, we do care about everyone who takes five minutes out of their day to read what we write. And, plus, we’re on this new no-spending kick (it’s complicated, but it involves scrambling credit card account numbers and an allowance), it allows us to shop for a purpose – answering questions! So, send us more here!

Here is this morning’s question:

I’m
almost six feet tall (medium build) and feel conflicted about wearing
heels.  I love the way they look and therefore have pretty much worn
them regularly the last few years regardless–especially since I now
have dress up for work.  However, I am starting to wonder whether they
make me look too much like a “giant”.  I am starting to try put a 2 1/2
inch limit on heel height for me, but what do you think–am I too tall
to wear heels at all?

Thanks,

Alison

Ok. We cannot say emphatically enough WEAR YOUR HEELS. We so support wearing what you feel good in – and if you feel best in heels, wear them! We just wrote this huge thing about Katie Holmes not wearing heels because of her shorter husband and then erased it because it doesn’t really matter. She is not asking us for advice. Your second sentence says you love the way they look – that, for us, seals it. No question. You love wearing heels, and take it from us, it can be hard to dress up flats. Wear them, love them, and be confident in them!

We will leave you with lyrics from one of our favorite songs from our most favorite musical. Because we honestly think confidence is the most important thing in getting dressed in the morning. That, and having clean underwear.

I have confidence in confidence alone
Besides which you see I have confidence in me!

  1. Screw it. If you like them and they are appropriate for work, wear them to work. If you like them and they are awesome, wear them all of the rest of the time. There is no reason to feel bad about being tall as long as you stand proud and work it! Nobody is going to look at you and say “hmm, I think she’s a giant” unless you’re walking around like Lurch from the Addams family. If you walk around working the heels and being comfortable with them, nobody will look twice (unless it’s one of those “damn, girl” kind of second looks because you rock the heels so hard).

  2. I do think super-high heels can look out of proportion on really short women (i.e. 4+” heels on someone 5′ or under), but if you’re tall–no problem. But ultimately I agree with LB — you like them? Wear them!

  3. I’m also really tall, and I have big feet. The problem with heels that I’ve encountered is that most shoe manufacturers have one height of heel they tack on to whatever size the shoe is–so a 2 1/2″ heel looks fabulous on a size 7 but makes my size 11 feet look ridiculously long. I almost always go for very high heels, just because the bigger sizes look better in them, the proportions are better. Does that make sense?

  4. I’m 5’11″ with a 5’8″ husband and love heels! I wear them out to dinner, work, wherever. Most of the time people are looking at how great your legs look and not how much taller you are.

  5. OMGosh ALison! Don’t you just adore being tall?! I’m 6 feet even…and its SUPER! Not just b/c I’m taller than everyone…or mostly but b/c everyone else wants to be just as tall! They’re all envious & I love it…hence I love my heels…the taller the better! The people who gawk are either wishing they could be you or wishing they could wear those shoes as well as you! So…GOOOO YOU!
