In today’s Reader Mail:
Hi Bunnyshop,
I know you’re doing a lot of boot-related questions lately, but if you’ll humor me for one more, please indulge this request. If you could purchase only one pair of brown boots this fall, had around $200 to spend, and wanted them to last/be stylish for a while, which pair would it be?
Thanks,
K.
You know, honestly, we were trying on boots this weekend—boot after boot after boot etc—and we just realized we look like dumbasses in them. We’re just too short. We don’t believe in any of that only-wear-skinny-jeans-if-you-are-5’8″-etc but really: We’re just too short. And our calves are all, set us free. We’re wearing heels all winter. Fuck the boots, we’re thinking.
That said, we’d buy these. These were our leading boots until our shoe-counter meltdown when we swore them off. (For the time being.) Above: Kate Moss for Topshop boots (please ignore the bizarre zipper-pull), about $190. Maybe other people have had bad experiences, but we totally love Topshop shoes and have had no problems with them once they were broken in. And our experiences with the shipping from the UK has been fast and not too annoying.
Otherwise, if we wanted flats, we’d get these, which we’ve discussed previously:

Canter and Trot boots, $248

Wait, you can be too short for boots? I’m 5’3″. This bodes badly. Can I really be too short?!?
Alison, let’s see what Bunnyshop has to say, but I think it’s a matter of proportion — that is, finding a style that works on the individual wearer.
I gave up on boots a couple of years ago too. I couldn’t find anything to fit my apparently abnorally large calves. I figured if you can’t find it in NY then it probably doesn’t exist. So instead I got a great pair of cognac steve madden wedges. I heart them; they’ve been good to me over the years and often get compliments.
