So yesterday we had the kind of day that you have when you realize at, say, 12 hours before your flight leaves, that as far as returning home from Mongolia is concerned, you can either pay $1600 for a bench in a Russian cargo plane or similar, or you could take a lovely, inexpensive, famous train to Beijing, then a quick flight to Shanghai, then an unbelievable lovely and free flight back to London on Virgin. But to do the one that does not involve sitting beside chickens and cows, you need a visa from the Chinese consultate. Before your plane leaves. In 12 hours.

All we are saying if that their organization at the consulate is any indication of their general organization overall, the Chinese are going to take over the planet. Hurrah, Chinese visa! And we love how it’s still impossible to get a person on the phone at the U.S. Passport Office, nevermind (really, nevermind) an actual passport. Er, not that we’re bitter. We love our country! And we love it even more when it works right. 2008, on the way, triple hurrah!

Anyway! We are totally besotted with all the questions people have been sending in, which we have been stockpiling while we are en route to Mongolia, possibly catching rabies. (Today we was the day we realized we forgot to get our travel vaccinations. Quadruple sarcastic hurrah!) So please, we beg and salute you: Keep sending them over. The ones we have received thus far have been amazing.

And in fact, so amazing that we couldn’t not put this one up right now, because we’re really curious what everyone would say. Here is the question:

If you could only have clothes from one store- what store would it be?

Obviously this question is extremely involved. We have thought about our own answer quite a bit, and of course it is tiered:

1: Price-is-no-object brick-and-mortar: Colette
2: Price-is-no-object virtual: net-a-porter
3: Price-is-an-object brick and mortar: Anthropologie (Of course, we’re ignoring the fact that half the furniture is worth more than we are.)
4: And price-is-an-object virtual: Shopbop. It is our fave. We are so confused if “fave” is an okay word or not. Er, we’re dealing with it.

And of course, we definitely need to add, now that we’ve thought about it, that these are our ideal-world versions, not where we actually do most of our shopping—which would, by item, probably be: Topshop, Old Navy, Forever 21, Urban, and random vintage places.

  1. Sadly – Ebay. I can’t afford brand new designer clothes but, with ebay, even trapped in the Midwest, I can find things I covet.
Also – Target – helps with the low-cost pieces to mix with the high-cost pieces and still afford the high cost pieces.
Not very glam, but it works!

  2. i just have to say that the necklace above looks like something out of claire’s or at least something from 90210 circa ’92. . . i suppose who’s to say that is a bad thing? i just don’t know about the choker. is a choker ever really flattering?

  3. i read that question and immediately thought Marni. price being no object, etc. so I was thinking ‘label’ not ‘store’. so my question is what single *designer* would you pick if you could only have clothes from one??
